TV Appearance (June 13, 1953) 02:52 buy track about This recording is compiled from old reel-to-reel tapes of Mr. Caldwell that circulated around Boone County for many years. The audio quality is not the greatest, but the selection of tunes and the manner is which they are played is astounding.Luther Caldwell, a well-known fiddler and farmer in Boone County, near Columbia, Missouri, lost his right arm up to the shoulder in an accident. Legend has it that a group of mechanics in the physical plant at Mizzou concocted an ingenious apparatus that would hold the bow and allow Caldwell to move the bow back and forth in air. All he needed do was hold the fiddle in his left-hand and simultaneously note the fingerboard, tilt the fiddle precisely so the correct string would touch the bow at the correct time and apply upward pressure sufficient to make the fiddle sound out and have dynamic variation in the volume and "touch" of the performance. Sounds easy, right? So remarkable was this accomplishment that Caldwell was featured in an issue of Popular Mechanics magazine was even invited to New Yrok City to appear on a live NBC television broadcast of Ted Mack's Amateur Hour on June 13, 1953. $(".tralbum-about").last().bcTruncate(TruncateProfile.get("tralbum_about"), "more", "less"); credits released May 14, 2015 license all rights reserved tags Tags folk missouri fiddling hillbilly old-time music Missouri Shopping cart total USD Check out about Missouri State Old Time Fiddlers Association Missouri
