Hitherto the analysis of detailed insect phenologies with climate change scenarios at the local scale was limited by the low spatial and temporal resolution of the climate forecasts. However, recent attempts have shown that downscaling regional climate simulations to the temporal and spatial scale of pest habitats and life cycles can be used to overcome those drawbacks [16]. Accordingly in our study the assessment was carried out in two steps. First we used a stochastic weather generator (WG) in combination with a re-sampling approach to provide hourly synthetic weather data for ten meteorological stations in Switzerland. In a second step we used the Codling Moth model, as implemented in the SOPRA forecasting system [17] to create statistically valid Codling Moth phenologies for present and future climate. The resulting data sets were used to evaluate the impact of climate change on the Codling Moth life cycle across Switzerland and to determine voltinism and prospective photoperiodic diapause induction as critical life-history components to forecast future pest phenologies.
The authors thank Martin Dubrovsky, Institute of Atmospheric Physics ASCR, Prague, Czech Republic, for the development of the hourly weather generator. A special thank goes to Heinrich Höhn, Research Station Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil, Switzerland, for extensive discussions on sustainable apple fruit production.
You missed my point to some degree. What we are seeing with Apple's iOS is potentially a systemic problem with all mobile devices. Unlike traditional PCs..which have a historic cultural of being able to run any operating system available..essentially being unlocked. Mobile devices have historically not be as open to repurposing or installing alternative operating systems. We are seeing Android phones that are not unlockable from device manufacturers. That's just another symptom of the larger problem. What I'm saying is there is a deeper problem lurking..a cultural problem between mobile device manufactures and participants in a maker culture (FLOSS advocates are just a subset of a larger maker culture where reporposing hardware to do what you want it to do not what the manufacturer says you are allowed to do is the key issue. Software freedom is just a subset of that more fundamental statement about hardware consumer freedom).Android devices right now maybe open enough for 3rd party application distribution..but there's no reason to expect them to be in the future. If anything there is pressure to lock mobile device down into ISP specific application channels from a revenue consideration. A locked down Android phone that you can't put another operating system on could easily be locked down further to prevent you from installing additional applications out of band via your sdcard or from a url. Its just a matter of time before an ISP feels the market pressure to do that and drive people through their own ISP branded store. Nothing is stopping that sort of lock down from happening other than consumer interest. Google isn't prohibiting that level of lockdown as far as I know. And its not just android phones. Other types of devices.. like the nook and kindle ereaders are under pressure to _not_ be general purpose devices..even though they could be repurposed for that easily. Its a looming cultural problem. As devices become less and less general purpose by design..there's more and more incentive for OEMs/ISPs to contain the consumer in a confined application space as a revenue generator...especially when the devices themselves are offered at loss-leader pricing and there is an expectation that revenue will be generated via other means.-jef Wesnoth struggles with App Store's GPL incompatibilities Posted Jul 21, 2010 22:11 UTC (Wed) by martinfick (subscriber, #4455) [Link]
Cervical cancer (CC) occupies fourth place in cancer incidence and mortality worldwide in women, with 560,505 new cases and 284,923 deaths per year. Approximately, nine of every ten (87%) take place in developing countries. When a macroscopic nodal involvement is discovered during a radical hysterectomy (RH), there is controversy in the literature between resect macroscopic lymph node compromise or abandonment of the surgery and sending the patient for standard chemo-radiotherapy treatment. The objective of this study is to compare the prognosis of patients with CC whom RH was abandoned and bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy and para-aortic lymphadenectomy was performed with that of patients who were only biopsied or with removal of a suspicious lymph node, treated with concomitant radiotherapy/chemotherapy in the standard manner. A descriptive and retrospective study was conducted in two institutions from Mexico and Colombia. Clinical records of patients with early-stage CC programmed for RH with an intraoperative finding of pelvic lymph, para-aortic nodes, or any extracervical involvement that contraindicates the continuation of surgery were obtained. Between January 2007 and December 2012, 42 clinical patients complied with study inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. In patients with CC whom RH was abandoned due to lymph node affectation, there is no difference in overall survival or in disease-free period between systematic lymphadenectomy and tumor removal or lymph node biopsy, in pelvic lymph nodes as well as in para-aortic lymph nodes, when these patients receive adjuvant treatment with concomitant radiotherapy/chemotherapy. This is a hypothesis-generator study; thus, the recommendation is made to conduct randomized prospective studies to procure better knowledge on the impact of bilateral pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy on this group of patients. 2ff7e9595c
